The students' perspective on Villanova Sports.

Hoops Mania 2014!

Villanova held it’s annual big basketball event to kickoff the season. It started with an introduction to the football team, getting the crowd pumped and inviting them to come to tomorrow’s Homecoming game against Morgan State at 3:30 p.m. Kevin Monangai rallied the troops and the audience before turning it over to the women’s basketball team. One-by-one each player of the women’s team was given a warm welcome by the Nova Nation crowd.

There was a commemoration for the 1995 Big East Champions and the 1985 NCAA Champions, for their 20th and 30th anniversary. Other alumni and great players of old were also honored tonight. Recent graduates Nick McMahon and Tony Chennault returned to present the Big East regular season championship trophy. James Bell had a nice message from Italy for the Villanova faithful. The men’s basketball team came out together as one unit and were given their Big East regular season title rings.

The Wildcats battled it out for dance floor supremacy. It was “Dancing with the Stars” Villanova edition, each player was grouped up with a dancer(s) from Villanova’s Dance Team. It was a close one, but the title ultimately went to “Darryl Reynolds and the Darryl-ettes.” After the Wildcats got warmed up with some dancing, the men’s, women’s, fraternities, and sororities teamed up for the three-point contest. There was confusion and a few scoreboard malfunctions, but eventually a winning team was crowned. However, there was a set agenda to follow and they had to scurry off, as Villanova prepared for their Blue-White scrimmage. The White Team beat the Blue Team 15-13 in a little preseason fun.

The Slam Dunk Contest was dropped from this year’s lineup and students began to rush onto the court for the mini-concert that concludes Hoops Mania. While the annual performance is supposed to be top-secret, this year’s surprise was spoiled. Rumors spread and a lot of speculating done by the students circulate leading up to the event each year, but earlier today the mystery was answered.

ScHoolboy Q, a hip-hop/rap artist from California, made the blunder of tweeting about his performance tonight. A few people replied to his tweet and after a poor attempt to cover it up, he ultimately deleted it. However, the news was already spread. ScHoolboy Q has been big in the hip-hop/rap world these last few years. He first came onto the scene in 2008 and has been on the rise ever since. He most recently released an album earlier this year, titled “Oxymoron.” He ended the show with his hit “Man of the Year” and gave Villanova a fond farewell.

The Wildcats will return to the Pavilion floor tomorrow night at approximately 7 p.m., for their annual Blue-White scrimmage that takes place 30 minutes after the homecoming game. Wildcat players will be available for fans at an autograph session that will take place after the scrimmage. Admission is free for both the scrimmage and the post-game autograph session.

The basketball team will take on Rollie Massimino and Northwood University for a special preseason exhibition game on November 4th.

It’s officially basketball season, a wonderful time of the year.
