As the old saying goes, “When door closes, another one opens.” As Villanova begins to wrap up its fall sports, athletes are gearing up for the return of the winter season. This weekend in particular is important for men’s soccer, football, swimming & diving, and basketball.

Men’s Soccer Season Finale:

The men’s soccer team has come a long way from where they were at the beginning of the season. After starting off with three straight losses, they battled their way back to an 8-6-3 record to get themselves back on the right track. The Wildcats have already punched their ticket for the Big East tournament, which begins this Tuesday. On Friday, November 7th at 2 p.m., Villanova concludes its regular season with a match against Big East rival Georgetown. The Hoyas boast a solid record of 10-3-4 and are ranked #11 on the Coaches’ Poll. They are entering Friday’s match with a three game winning streak. The Wildcats are coming off of a win against St. John’s and a loss to Xavier, both of whom, were beaten by the Hoyas.

Villanova’s football team is looking to bounce back from a rough 10-9 loss to Richmond. However, the Wildcats still remain ranked in the top-10 for both the Coaches’ Poll and the Sports Network rankings. They take on the Towson Tigers (4-5) this Saturday night, November 8th at 7 p.m. The Tigers come to Villanova Stadium after winning their previous two games by a margin of seven points or less. They are far from the form they were in just a season ago, when they made it all the way to the FCS National Championship game. This will be Villanova’s penultimate home game. So if you haven’t already this season, come and watch our guys this Saturday. Check back tomorrow for an in-depth preview of Saturday night’s game.

Just One More:

The basketball team hit the Pavilion hardwood for the first time this season. While it was just a preseason game, it was quite a special one. Before the Wildcats begin their basketball campaign for supremacy, they will have one more preseason game before officially starting the regular season. Villanova will host Division-II school Nyack College this Sunday, November 9th at 12 p.m. However, unlike last night’s preseason game, it won’t be at the Pavilion but at the Wells Fargo Center instead. Fans will have to wait until Friday, November 14th, when the Wildcats take on Lehigh to open the regular season.

Water Works:

Both the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams have a big meet that will span across Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Villanova came out empty handed when they traveled to Penn State last weekend for a meet, with both the men’s and women’s teams losing to the Nittany Lions. However, there were a few highlights from the meet. Junior Fiona Hardie was named Big East Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for her performance in the meet. Hardie won the 100m and 200m butterfly races. This weekend’s meet will take place in Piscataway, NJ and will feature four different schools. Villanova, Georgetown, Seton Hall, and Rutgers are scheduled to attend.
