With most of campus cleared out for the Thanksgiving weekend, athletics beats on. Here are the different things you can look forward to this weekend while you’re eating some turkey, Black Friday shopping, or recovering from the busy next few days.
Back to Brooklyn:
The men’s basketball team is going back to the Barclays Center for the second straight year for another Thanksgiving week tournament. This time it’ll be for the NIT Season Tip-off and not the Legends’ Classic. The Wildcats will face-off against the Stanford Cardinal on Thanksgiving day at 4:30 p.m. Villanova enters 4-0 after comfortably beating each team it has played so far. Meanwhile, Stanford is still struggling to find the answer on how to replace its top three scorers from last season, all of which who have been lost to graduation or the NBA Draft. The Cardinal have a balanced attack, boasting five different players who average at least 10 points per game. However, they sit at just 2-2 after losing back-to-back games to SMU and St. Mary’s. Whoever wins will take on the winner of Georgia Tech/Arkansas.
Onwards to Omaha:
The volleyball team heads to Omaha for their first Big East Tournament since 2010. The Wildcats enter as the 2-seed after finishing 24-7 in the regular season and notching a program-high 14 wins in conference play. They will take on Xavier on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Musketeers are led by recently named Big East Player of the Year Abbey Bessler. Xavier enters with a three-game winning streak and an 18-11 record. Villanova has some players who also received some recognition from the conference. Allie Loitz and Emma Pettit were both named First Team All-Big East yesterday, while Gabby Pethokoukis earned second team honors. The two teams split the season series, with Villanova winning comfortably 3-1 at home. The Musketeers edged the Wildcats in their last meeting in a close 3-2 win in Cincinnati. Whoever wins will have either Creighton or Marquette waiting for them.
Christmas Comes A Little Early:
The women’s basketball team is heading over to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Lehigh Christmas City Classic. The Wildcats are fresh off of a win over St. Joe’s and will be opening with another Big Five school in Drexel. Both teams enter with a 2-1 record. The Dragons are led by the tandem of Sarah Curran and Rachel Pearson. Curran leads the team with 19.3 points per game, while Pearson is the only other player to average in double figures with 12.7. Villanova has primarily placed the ball in Caroline Coyer‘s hands so far, but we’ve also seen some great contributions from center Megan Quinn and Adrianna Hahn. Katherine Coyer and Alex Louin have also made their presence felt. While Caroline may be leading the team in scoring, there has been steady contributions across the board from everyone else. The winner takes on either Lehigh or Montana.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
