Arcidiacono, Brunson Named to USBWA’s Watch List for National Awards

-CSN Philly

This afternoon, the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) released its watch lists for national awards, including the Oscar Robertson Trophy and the Wayman Tisdale Award.

The USBWA is comprised of about 1,000 sports journalists covering college basketball for newspapers, magazines and websites.

Among the field of 33 players from 26 different schools for the Oscar Robertson Trophy is Villanova senior Ryan Arcidiacono. The Oscar Robertson Trophy is awarded to the national player of the year, as voted by the USBWA.

As for the Wayman Tisdale Award, an award given to the freshman player of the year, Jalen Brunson is among the list of 18 players for consideration.

Both awards, along with the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award for player of the year in women’s basketball, will be presented at the College Basketball Awards Gala in Oklahoma City on April 11, 2016.

Arcidiacono is averaging 12.4 points per game and 4.0 assists per game. He is shooting 50.8% on the floor and a respectable 39.4% from long range. His numbers this year are up from his career average from his first three years at Villanova, where he averaged 10.6 points per game and shot 37.6% on the floor.

Brunson, Villanova’s prized freshman, had high expectations coming into this season after leading Adlai E. Stevenson High School to a state title in his senior year, winning MVP honors en route to a gold medal from the U-19 FIBA World Championships, and becoming a McDonald’s All-American.  Through seven games, he is averaging 11.1 points per game and 3.7 assists per game.

Also in the mix for these national accolades are some fellow Big East players. Butler’s Kellen Dunham and Providence’s Kris Dunn are also among consideration for the Oscar Robertson Trophy. As for the Wayman Tisdale Award, Marquette’s Henry Ellenson was included in the watch last.
