As Villanova University heads down the homestretch and starts gearing up for the end-of-semester finals, let’s review some of the important letters of the alphabet and numbers you need to know for this upcoming week of Villanova Athletics. We’ve got the NCAAs, the number six, and plenty more on deck.
The women’s volleyball team heading to University Park, Pa., this weekend for their first NCAA Tournament since 1997. Villanova finished 25-8 this season, going 14-4 in Big East play and a perfect undefeated record at home. The Wildcats claimed an at-large bid and will play against Dayton this Friday at 5 p.m in the opening round of the tournment. The Flyers clinched an automatic bid to the tournament with their sweep of Ohio in their conference tournament finals to claim the Atlantic 10 Championship. Dayton carries a 26-5 record going into this weekend and have a 24-game win streak going. The Flyers haven’t lost since September 11 to Baylor. The winner of Friday’s game will take on the winner of Penn State/Howard the following day.
HI <– PA:
The men’s basketball team is will fly west to Hawaii as part of a commemorative event for Pearl Harbor. The Wildcats will take on the #6 Oklahoma Sooners next Monday at Bloch Arena in Hawaii, in honor of the 74th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The Wildcats enter the game undefeated at 7-0. Meanwhile, the Sooners will play one more game tomorrow night against Central Arkansas before heading over. As of today, Oklahoma sits at 4-0. The Sooners are led by last season’s Big 12 Player of the Year Buddy Hield. Hield was also selected as the preseason pick to win it again this year. Through four games, Hield averages an insane 22.0 points per game. Stay tuned for a more in-depth scouting report and preview as we get closer to Monday.
Big Five (and More):
The women’s basketball team is also heading west, but not as far as Hawaii. This weekend, Villanova will participate in Cal Classic over at Berkeley, Ca, but first the Wildcats play Big Five rival Temple later today at 5 p.m. The Owls are coming off of three straight losses, most recently losing to fellow Big Five St. Joe’s last Sunday. The Wildcats are currently 4-1 and enter with a four-game winning streak. After playing Temple, they will fly out west to play Sacramento State in the opening round of the Cal Classic on Saturday, December 5th. Tip off is at 5 p.m.
Nope, not Allen Iverson, but rather the Big A.I. Open. The swimming and diving teams are Princeton bound for the weekend after a three week hiatus. There’s going to be quite a crowd over at Princeton’s DeNunzio Pool, teams from eight different schools are slated to attend. Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Princeton, Rider, and Villanova, are all expected to come. The women’s team is coming off of a loss to Penn, its first and only blemish of the season so far. As for the men’s team, they are still looking for their first win. After this weekend, both teams will go into another hiatus until January.
