State of the Nova Nation – Season One (Episodes 1-8)

Episode One

Summary: As we experimented and tried a few things in our first episode ever, we took an in-depth look at football and men’s soccer. The football team was fresh off of a loss to Penn, while men’s soccer had just played their first conference game of the year. All-American linebacker Don Cherry joined us to chat about the season and his career.

Episode Two

Summary: Villanova was awarded the first ever Big East President’s Award for its achievement in athletics, academics, and service. The volleyball team improved to 13-4 after back-to-back sweeps of Marquette and DePaul. After grabbing an early lead over Creighton, the women’s soccer team was handed a tough road loss, losing 3-1 to the Bluejays. Aaron Sandifer spoke to us about his career so far, how he’s preparing for the upcoming season, and his future.

Summary: We started to finally get the recipe and rhythm down in this episode, where we spoke to Bobby Reiff about the preparation and history behind Villanova’s biggest weekend in the fall. Field Hockey had its senior day, playing Big Five rival Temple. The volleyball team posted back-to-back sweeps of Creighton (it would eventually be the Bluejays only loss in conference play) and DePaul.

Summary: It was another successful Fall Festival weekend on Villanova’s campus. The men’s basketball team played their preseason exhibition game over Pace University, where the public got their first glimpse of Jalen Brunson. For our weekly conversation, Claire Crutchfield stopped by the studio to discuss the team’s first Big East Tournament bid since 2010, the season as a whole, and looking ahead down the stretch of the regular season.

Summary: No weekly guest in this episode, so we threw in an extra segment. The football team had a dramatic, last-second homecoming win over Richmond. Men’s basketball rolled in its season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson. The volleyball team improved to 10-0 at home after sweeping Seton Hall.

Episode Six

Summary: Football head coach Andy Talley shared his thoughts on the season, his quarterbacks, and the loss to James Madison in the final game of the season. The volleyball team finished a perfect 12-0 at home and we recap the games and look ahead to the Big East Tournament. The men’s basketball team head into Thanksgiving with a 4-0 record.

Episode Seven

Summary: It was a big weekend for Villanova Athletics. Selection Sunday brought good news to the volleyball team, who was headed for their first NCAA Tournament since 1997. The men’s basketball team won the NIT Season Tipoff tournament over at the Barclays Center in New York during Thanksgiving. As for the women’s basketball team, they celebrated Christmas early with winning the Lehigh Christmas City Classic. Patrick Tiernan, who placed second overall at cross country nationals, joined us in-studio to talk about the season, nationals, and Olympic aspirations.

Episode Eight

As for the men’s basketball team, they suffered a tough loss against Oklahoma in Hawaii, we break that down too.
