Today is a momentous day in the storied history of Villanova basketball. The greatest Villanova teams have come and gone without achieving what has happened today. Today, Villanova is the best college basketball team in the country. The AP Poll has ranked the Villanova Wildcats #1 for the first time.
Villanova has come so close so many times. Our Wildcats have ranked #2 no less than seven separate times, most recently in the final poll of last year. It is amazing this day has taken so long, especially considering Villanova’s successful history. With 47 NCAA tournament wins, Villanova had, until today, the most postseason wins of any program to not spend a week at #1. With an all-time winning percentage of .644, Villanova was also college basketball’s winningest program to never rank #1. But no more. Today Villanova is the best in the land, and they deserve it.
There was some debate as to whether Maryland should jump Villanova to be #1. Instead, only 13 out of the 65 pollsters ranked the Terps first, who now rank second ahead of #3 Oklahoma and #4 Iowa. In total, six different teams received first place votes, the most since 2011.
#5 Xavier joins Villanova in the top five. This is the second time this season that two Big East teams rank in the top five. After two losses, Providence dropped to #20. Seton Hall is receiving 14 votes.
