The champions are not done yet.
They have an opportunity to add some more accolades to this year’s accomplishments on July 13 at this year’s ESPY Awards Ceremony.
It was announced on Wednesday afternoon that the Wildcats were nominated for four ESPY Awards: Best Team, Best Play, Best Game, and Best Coach/Manager.
Villanova was nominated for the Best Team category and will be competing against other championship teams from this year. Six other championship teams are up for this award–Alabama’s football team, the UConn women’s basketball team, Super Bowl winners Denver Broncos, World Series champion Kansas City Royals, Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, and the recent winners of the NBA Finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
As for the Best Play category, Kris Jenkins‘ game-winning buzzer beater to give Villanova the win over the North Carolina Tar Heels, is up for a nomination. It is one of 16 candidates for this award. The shot itself is seeded No. 2 amongst the 16 nominees, ranked behind Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his game-winning Hail Mary against the Detroit Lions.
This year’s NCAA Tournament championship game versus North Carolina is one of three nominees for the Best Game category. The other two options are the Green Bay-Arizona NFC Divisional playoff game and game seven between Cleveland and Golden State in the NBA Finals.
Jay Wright was nominated for the Best Coach/Manager category. He will be going against Alabama head football coach Nick Saban, UConn women’s basketball team head coach Geno Auriemma, Cleveland Cavaliers’ Tyronn Lue, and Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost.
